Natures Companion is a snapshot guide to plants, people and events in horticulture. Articles on varied gardening topics such as new plants, vegetable/herb production and ornamental plant selection give an overview of how and why certain plants are utilized throughout Nebraska and the Midwest. All plant people have traveled about the country and found some kind of local plant-based guide to satisfy their passion for new plant cultivars or just a different perspective on gardening in that region. All these very informative and plant centered newspapers/publications are found in other surrounding states and metropolitan areas with successful support by the communities. These publications are regional, and not only fulfill the passion for new plant information but also showcase the attractions of a specialty nursery or garden center that sets itself apart from everyone else. In short, a way of marketing this way of living. Of course, having it available at no cost is a plus, but when it comes down to content and the variety of plant information, that is where the value really comes in. “Value-added” is how appreciation can be shown to customers, and has been a big part of the concept of this magazine. Natures Companion is here as a value-added piece for the consumers in horticulture. Celebrating our work with the earth, while promoting the growth of the horticulture industry in our region. In this premiere issue you will find there are a wide variety of topics; from seed collection to the attractiveness of tree bark. This horticultural cornucopia of articles is due to the enthusiasm of our green industry. Once word of the magazines concept left the potting shed 6 months ago, the phone started to ring and the magazine started to write itself thanks to a volunteer staff. These contributors are the best of the best in the region, offering insight, advice and observations to the reader. A big thank-you goes out to all of them, and we eagerly anticipate all of their future contributions. The magazine has been made possible by the sponsorship of the Nebraska Nursery and Landscape Association (NNLA) and through grant money from the United States Department of Agriculture through Nebraska Department of Agriculture. Copies are available at participating nurseries, garden centers and extension offices. -Todd Morrissey |
